Captain Kayak, Sayville

Down near the shore in Sayville there are many marine related businesses. This is Captain Kyak. I just love the colorful kyaks.

Hawkins House

I found a historic house in Yaphank called the Hawkins House, built in 1850. I'll have to do a little research and find out who lived there. This was done in my Stillman & Birn journal.

Sunday, February 26, 2012

This was done at my portrait group this past Tuesday. Dawn was a really nice model and I hear she will be coming back soon. I'm happy with the lower half of her face, but I think I have her eyes to high up.

Barn View in Chester

I did this painting the day after the last one I posted. I had stayed over at my sister's house planning to go visiting with her, but she wasn't feeling well. So instead I drove back upstate and looked for a new view that we hadn't painted before. I did a larger painting of this barn last year. I drove around until I could see it from a different angle.

Meadow View Farm

On Saturday I was up near Middletown, NY with my sister, so we had to stop on the way to take some barn photos and paint something. This is one of our favorite barns. It is the Meadow View Farm.

Willow Avenue House

We had a rainy day yesterday but I wanted to paint something outdoors. I went exploring in Islip which had some interesting houses. This is 7 x 7 in my Stillman & Birn journal.

Valentine Bouquet

These were a gift from my husband for Valentine's Day. I requested that he not get me roses due to the price of them and I prefer having different flowers to paint. He came home so pleased that he had found something really colorful, and they are beautiful. This is 8 x 10.

Rupert #2

The SBAA portrait group met yesterday, and this gentleman posed for us. He has posed before, but my portrait of him made him look a lot younger. My second attempt, seen here, comes closer, but I think he still looks younger than he is. I'll just have to keep painting his portrait until I get it right.

Happy Valentine's Day

This is the painting I did for my Valentine's Day cards that I sent out. I send out so many that I can't understand how the Post Office isn't in the black yet. lol I bought a tiny box of chocolates to use as a model. There were 4 chocolates in the box, but all the painting rules say use an uneven number of items, so I forced myself to eat one of them. This is titled "Sweet Treats." Enjoy them...I promise you won't have to worry about the calories.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Flamenco Dancer

I always said I'd like to try sketching dancers from life, but it is even harder than I thought. Yesterday my local library had a presentation by a group who did Flamenco music. I tried sketching and painting the female dancer, but she never held a pose for very long. I did give it a shot.

Lower Lily Lake, Yaphank

I was hoping to have some snow to paint yesterday, but we only had a little and by the time I got out to paint something it was gone! I ended up at Lily Lake in Yaphank. I've always wanted to pain this view across the water. This is about 4 x 6 in my Stilllman & Birn journal.

Saturday, February 11, 2012

I almost forgot to post this week's portrait from my SBAA group. This is Dot, the mother-in-law of one of the artists I paint with. I think I made her look a bit younger than she really is, but I don't think she minded at all. This is about 5 x 7.

Morning Snack

Yesterday I had to drive up to Middletown, NY to drop off paintings. I always like going up there because of the scenery I pass along the way. There are some great farms just off the road. I have painted views of this dairy farm before, but I focused on the dairy cows this time. This was done in my Stillman & Birn journal.

Old Dock View

This is a quick, small painting done on a half page in my Stillman and Birn journal. It was painted near Old Dock in Deer Park.

After painting at the camellia house I went over to the regular greenhouse at the Planting Fields Arboretum. There were lots of orchids and tropical plants. I did this of some of the plants, many of which were near the roof. This is 4 x 6.

Camellia House

My travels yesterday took me to the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. I wanted to go visit the camellia  house which is in bloom at this time of year. I took a few photos and then painted this view of one of the exits from the building. That way I got a bit of architecture and the flowers too. This was done in my Stillman & Birn 7 x 7 journal.

East Broadway View

Yesterday I headed back to Port Jefferson hoping that it would be easier to park somewhere with a view...not so easy. lol I did finally get a parking spot looking down towards East Broadway. The harbor is just beyond these buildings. I was able to get a few figures who were walking by in the nice weather. This was done in my Stillman & Birn journal and is about 4 x 7.

Friday, February 3, 2012

I went to the SBAA portrait group on Tuesday and painted Carl. He had a great face, but I was worried about doing a stubbly beard and not making it look like dirt on his face. I'm happy with the way this came out. This is about 5 x 7.

Roast Coffee & Tea Trading Company

My sketch group scheduled a sketching session at Roast Coffee & Tea Trading Company on Main Street in Patchogue last night. We've sketched there before. This time I did a sketch looking out the windows toward the street. This is about 4 x 7 done in my Stillman & Birn journal.
We had unseasonably warm temperatures yesterday so in the afternoon I headed over to the Suffolk County Farm to sketch a few of the animals en plein air. Unfortunately each time I started to sketch someone came along to move the animals somewhere else. I did get a few sketches done.

Uphill in Port Jeff

I painted this the other day in Port Jefferson. I love that on the north shore of Long Island when you are near the water there are often hills. I like looking up at this corner and seeing the other houses. This painting is 5 x 7. For some reason I can't get a good picture of this. It keeps showing much more yellow than it it.
